ZDRAVE Specialised Rehabilitation Hospital EAD was opened in 1973. In the period 2003-2006, a major programme for the renovation and modernisation of the hospital was completed and a contemporary sports and rehabilitation centre (SRC) was built.
Today the complex is a balneology centre of national importance for all-year-round prophylaxis, rehabilitation and holidays and is visited not only by patients with cardiovascular and neurological conditions and musculoskeletal and metabolism disorders but also by healthy people for prophylaxis purposes.
In 2006 the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Health appraised the overall operation of the hospital and graded it as excellent for a period of 5 years. The hospital received excellent appraisal once again during its last accreditation in 2012.

The town of Bankia is a popular resort located 17 km south of Sofia, on the north foothills of Lyulin Mountain, sitting at 630-750 m above sea level. The climate there is humid continental with slight mountain influence. The average annual temperature of air is 9.4°С, where the average temperature for January is +2°С and the average temperature for July is +19.6°С. The unique trait of Bankia’s climate has to do with the airflows coming from the directions of Vitosha and Lyulin Mountains every couple of hours - they saturate the atmosphere with freshness and oxygen (negative air ions). Bankia’s mineral water, whose temperature upon emerging from the spring is 36.5–37°С, is a main healing factor in the resort. It has low minerals and hypothermal content, and is rich in hydrogen carbonate, sulphates and sodium. It is mild, clear, colourless and odourless, with a very pleasant taste.
The balneology treatment with mineral water involves baths, pools, underwater massages, inhalations, and drinking water, as the water has both overall and local effects on the body systems. Its proper and systemic use is a serious prevention weapon in the fight against the symptoms of tiredness and fatigue, as well as a powerful means of slowing down the aging processes. It facilitates and speeds up the recovery processes after severe illnesses, provides protection against complications and prevents them from becoming chronic.
The complex uses only mineral water for medicinal procedures, the pools and its rooms.
The complex has:
- 135 double rooms:
- 17 single rooms;
- 5 studios;
- 3 dining rooms;
- 2 conference halls for 180 and 30 people, respectively;
- lobby bar with a garden;
- on the territory of the complex there is also a COOP shop.
In relation to the growing demand for high quality pre-hospital care and expanding and easing the access to the medical service package, the hospital has opened a medical centre with rooms for specialised consultations.
The hospital also admits patients by virtue of contracts with the National Health Insurance Fund and the National Social Security Institute, respectively.
The complex provides open admission to organised groups from Bulgaria and abroad for their holidays, rehabilitation and treatment.
